Anchored in the Storm, Not Managing the Waves
Acts 27:29
29 Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.
Thought:
On Paul’s dangerous voyage, the sailors could not control the wind, the rain, or the waves. They did what they could. They cast out anchors and waited for daylight. The anchors did not calm the sea. They simply kept the ship from being smashed to pieces.
We often live as if our main task is to manage the waves. We try to control every detail, solve every problem, and prevent every hardship. Yet the deepest need of our hearts is not for a life without storms. It is for a soul with a strong anchor.
Hebrews tells us that we have an anchor for the soul that is both sure and steadfast. That anchor is our hope in Christ, our great High Priest who has gone within the veil. Jesus also told us how our daily lives can be secured. Love God with all that you are. Love your neighbor as yourself.
The anchor does not stop the storm. The anchor does stop the drift!
If your heart feels unsteady, go back to the two great commandments. Ask the Lord to drive them deep into your mind and heart. When we love God fully and love others faithfully, we are fastened to something deeper than circumstances. We are fastened to the very heart of God.
Prayer:
Father, I bring to You the storms and uncertainties in my life today. I confess that I often try to control what I cannot control. Anchor my soul in Christ. Fix my heart in love for You and love for others. When I am tempted to fear, help me to trust. When I am tempted to drift, pull me back to these two great commands. Let Your love hold me steady until You bring me safely through. I pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
