Living in the Father’s Loving Fellowship
John 14:21
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Thought
God’s love is the beginning of everything. Scripture teaches that the Lord moved toward us first, not because we were good, but because He is gracious. He loved us while we were still sinners, and that love is what opened the door for salvation and our adoption. We do not obey in order to become God’s children. We obey because, by faith in Christ, we already belong to Him.
At the same time, Jesus says that when we love our Father with all our heart, it changes how we feel about the Father’s love. There is a difference between being part of the family and enjoying the closeness of family fellowship. A child does not stop being a child when he disobeys, but disobedience can create distance in the family relationship. Trust can be strained, joy can be diminished, and fellowship can feel hindered, not because the Father has stopped loving, but because the child is no longer walking in obedience.
This is why Scripture speaks of God’s discipline. Like a wise and loving Father, He corrects those who belong to Him. His discipline is not rejection of the child, but restoration. He trains His children so they will turn back, grow in holiness, and return to the joy of fellowship. The goal is not punishment for punishment’s sake, but a renewed closeness and a clearer walk with Him.
When you cling to Christ and walk in His Word, you are not earning God’s love. You are stepping into the joy of what has been true all along. It is like moving out from under self-made clouds of stubbornness and rebellion and into the warmth and brightness of His love. The sunshine was never absent, but obedience is like clearing the cloudiness of the heart and allowing the sun to shine more clearly.
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me first and adopting me as Your child through Jesus. Forgive me for the ways my disobedience has clouded my fellowship with You. I do not want distance; I want closeness. Restore in me a true, obedient heart that enjoys Your presence, correction, and care. Let me live in the warmth of Your fatherly love each day. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
