Abiding, Not Just Believing
John 15:4
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Thought:
There is a difference between knowing about Jesus and abiding in Jesus. The word “abide” means to remain, stay, continue, and not depart. It is a settled, ongoing connection. Like a branch that never detaches from the vine.
We often try to “produce” fruit by effort, willpower, or self-discipline alone. But the branch is not a fruit factory; it is a fruit bearer. The life and power come from the vine. The Christian life is not about you trying harder; it’s about you staying closer and more connected. It is Christ’s life flowing through you as you remain in Him: in His Word, in prayer, in obedience, and in love.
If you feel spiritually dry, ask: Am I truly abiding, or just occasionally visiting?
Prayer:
Lord, teach me what it truly means to abide in You. I confess that I often try to live the Christian life in my own strength. Remind me that apart from You I can do nothing. Draw me into a deeper, constant, life-giving connection with You. Let Your life flow through me in a way that bears real, lasting fruit. In Jesus' name. Amen.
