Nails, Hooks, and the Cross
Hebrews 6:19
19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.
Thought:
In Israel’s worship life, pegs, hooks, and nails held the Tabernacle curtains in place and the Torah scrolls in order. The Word of God was pictured as something hanging and secured. Jesus said that all the law and the prophets hang on the two great commands of love.
In the fullness of time, the living Word of God, Jesus Himself, was hung on a cross. The One whose words were written on scrolls became the One whose body was pierced by nails. Those nails were not only tools of Roman execution. They were signs of divine love.
The Scriptures hung on parchment.
The commandments hang on the peg of love.
The Savior hung on the cross for sinners.
All the earlier pictures of hooks and pegs find their deepest meaning at Calvary. Our hope is an anchor for the soul because it is tied to what Jesus has already accomplished. He loved the Father perfectly and loved us completely, even to death.
Our anchor is not our feelings or our performance. Our anchor is Christ crucified and risen. The love that held Him to the cross is the love that now holds us steady. In every storm, we cling not to ourselves, but to Him.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that my hope is anchored in what You did on the cross. Thank You for the love that kept You there, now keeps me. Forgive me when I trust my efforts more than Your finished work. Help me see every command and every trial through the cross. Anchor my soul in Your sacrifice and in Your victory. I ask this in Your name, Jesus. Amen.
