I Shall Not Want

Philippians 4:11
Not that I speak in respect of want for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

Thought:
David’s words from Psalm 23:1, “I shall not want” do not mean that he never felt desire or faced hardship. David knew seasons of fear, loss, betrayal, and even the consequences of his own sin. Yet he could say he was not in want because his contentment did not depend on his circumstances. In the same way, Paul testifies that he learned to be content in every situation, whether in abundance or in need. Contentment is not the absence of longing. It is the settled confidence that God is sufficient for every need.

The world tells us contentment is found by getting more. Scripture teaches that contentment is found by trusting God more. Many of us live exhausted because we are always reaching for the next thing we believe will finally make us happy. God invites us to a different way of living, where our peace does not rise and fall with our bank account, our health, our achievements, or our relationships. Today, ask yourself honestly, “What do I believe I must have to be happy” Bring that thing to God and confess that He alone is enough. As you trust the Shepherd, you will find a deeper rest, knowing that He holds everything you truly need.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I admit that I often tie my happiness to my circumstances. Teach me, as You taught Paul and David, to find my contentment in You alone. Show me the places in my heart where I have believed the lie that one more thing will finally satisfy me. Give me grace to surrender those false hopes and to rest in Your perfect sufficiency. Help me to trust that You know what I need and that You will provide in Your time and in Your way. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
