The Freedom of Honest Brokenness

Luke 18:13
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Thought:
The tax collector had no list of religious achievements and no defense to offer. He felt the weight of his guilt so deeply that he could not even lift his eyes. His posture and his words revealed a heart that had stopped pretending to be good and deserving. He understood that he was a sinner before a holy God and that his only hope was mercy. The word used for mercy carries the idea of atonement and covering. He was essentially asking God to provide a sacrifice that would deal with his sin and remove his guilt.

This is the doorway into true freedom! When we stop comparing ourselves to others and simply confess our sin to God, we step into the place where grace abounds. Hallelujah! Honest brokenness is not the end of hope. It is the beginning of healing. The publican did not promise God that he would fix himself first. He came as he was, broken and guilty, and trusted in the mercy of God. Today, bring your sin into the light. Stop excusing it or minimizing it. Confess it honestly and plainly. Cast yourself on Christ who shed his blood to cover it fully. There you will find the peace that comes from being forgiven rather than from pretending to be good.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I come to you like the publican. I confess that I am a sinner who needs mercy. I cannot clean my own heart and I cannot erase my own guilt. Thank you for dying in my place and shedding your blood for my sins. Cover me with your mercy and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Teach me to walk in honest humility before you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
